  • OPTION 1 - PARENTING

    If you’re thinking about parenting this child, but you’re not sure if you’re ready, consider:


    • Are you mentally and emotionally ready to raise this child? If you’re not sure, you may benefit from discussing this with a counselor.
    • Are you financially prepared to raise this child? On average, the cost of pregnancy and delivery is about $8,800, and recent estimates say that raising that child will cost about $233,610.

    If you feel that you’re mentally and emotionally ready to parent this child, but not financially ready to be a parent, you might consider seeing if you qualify for state-funded benefit programs that could help you raise your child.

  • OPTION 2 - ABORTION

    The first thing you should do if you’re considering an abortion is contact your doctor and schedule a consultation. A doctor will need to assess how far along you are in your pregnancy and if there are any medical risks to consider in your individual case. These factors can influence which abortion options are available to you.


    Abortion laws vary by state. However, in most states, abortion is only available as an unplanned pregnancy option for women who are in early stages in their pregnancies. Eighty-eight percent of abortions within the U.S. occur via pill form within the first few weeks, and most states don’t perform abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. If You are in the later stages of pregnancy, you may need to consider pregnancy options other than abortion.



    The District of Columbia and the state of Maryland have relatively few new restrictions on abortion access. The state of Virginia, however, has strict abortion regulations and steps you must follow in order to receive an abortion. Review these laws carefully before choosing this as an unplanned pregnancy option if you reside in this state.
